A strain is an over-stretched or torn muscle or tendon. This injury can range from a mild tearing or fibers to a complete tear or avulsion. The most severe strain produces swelling and discoloration and should be treated by a physician. Milder strains respond well to rest, ice (on for 10 mins, off for 10 mins, repeat 3-5X), compression of the injured site (the first day or two) and elevation. Oral anti-inflammatories are helpful for pain and swelling. So next time you think you strained a muscle- follow these easy steps and you’ll be well on your way to recovery! Happy healing!
