Of course, you can exercise post breast cancer and breast surgery. The tricky part is to know what to do? Following a surgery like this one; it is perfectly normal to experience lack of range of motion, certainly lack of strength/stamina and of course fear… Fear of doing something wrong that could slow down your recovery. The important part is to educate yourself- remember; you have to be an advocate for your own health. Talk to doctors, exercise specialists, etc… and if you live in the Hamilton area, consider the ressources available at your fingertips–> ywca encore program. Here’s a short decription:
– Program is FREE
– 9 weeks in duration for 2 hours/week
– Focus is to increase mobility and flexibility in your arms and shoulders. Boost your self esteem and self imagine. Relieve any discomfort as a result of surgery. Create a positive attitude towards life and health, etc…
– Breakdown of a session: Land exercises, healthy snacks, dicussion, guest speakers, pool exercises, etc…
– Program is led by 2 encore coordinators (all YWCA Hamilton encore coordinators are also Fitness leaders and Personal Trainers- so their knowledge on exercise is even greater- “you know you’ll be in good hands”)
The Beauty about joining an exercise program that is specific to your needs is of course the support from the other participants who are going through the exact same thing you are. ywca encore exercises are also focused on reducing and helping prevent lymphodema.
